Did you know that Adelante just celebrated Nurses Appreciation Week? Nurses Week is from May 6 to May 12 (Florence Nightingale’s birthday). Furthermore, Nurses Week is a great time to reflect on all nurses do to keep people safe and healthy.

Nurses Week History

First, Nurses Week has an inspiring history. In 1953, Dorothy Sutherland; an employee of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; asked President Dwight Eisenhower to create an official nurses day. Then in February 1974, President Richard Nixon created a week to celebrate nurses.

In 1981, after his assassination attempt, a team of nurses cared for President Ronald Reagan. They helped to dislodge a bullet inches from his heart and aided his recovery. A few months after the shooting, Reagan sought out the nurses who had helped him. He sent them personal thank you notes and words of encouragement. And, on May 6, 1982, he signed an executive order honoring Nurses Week.

We Love Our Nurses

Nursing is stressful overall, and COVID-19 has only made it more challenging. For example, Adelante’s nurses work round’ the clock to make sure our clients stay healthy. Diana Frances, Nurse Educator and Nursing Services Director, gave some glowing words about our nursing team and their devotion:

“I have the most amazing Nursing team. They are always willing to support each other in every way they can…[They work] countless hours and advocate for each individual regarding their health needs by collaborating with their physicians and team members.

Our nurses are dedicated, too. To point out, our three current nurses have worked for us 7, 12, and 23 years!

How you can support a nurse

Nurses certainly work hard to keep people safe and healthy. Did you know that nurses walk an average of between 4-5 miles every day? As a token of appreciation, Diana gave her team a “Nurses Survival Kit including gifts like lotion and chocolate. In like fashion, if you have a nurse in your life, a small gift or even a simple thank you note or card (like what President Reagan gave) can mean the world to someone.
