Birdwatching in the Bosque

Destination Accessibility, Adelante’s newest program, is working on accessible tourism including adventures planned with people with disabilities in mind. The next event is during Balloon Fiesta week, on Wednesday, October 9, 2024 from 8 am to 10 am at Rio Grande Nature Center State Park, 2901 Candelaria Rd NW, in Albuquerque. Birdwatching in the Bosque is open to people with disabilities, those with mobility challenges, and their friends and family ages 8 and older. Tickets are $50 per person which include a parking pass, breakfast, coffee, a guided birding tour, and a pair of loaned binoculars.

Join us in venturing into the avian world of finches, warblers, and more with local birding experts, Lee and Asher. Whether you’re a curious newcomer or a seasoned birdwatcher, all are welcome. Lee and Asher will guide us through the Rio Grande Nature Center. It is a local birdwatching hotspot as birds travel down the central flyway. The central flyway is a major migratory path cutting through Albuquerque.

During this fun event, Lee and Asher will guide us along the trails in the Bosque. If you need one, you can also rent a wheelchair equipped for the trails, from Destination Accessibility. Along the way, you will learn the art of spotting and identifying birds.

What to Expect & Bring for Birdwatching

First, if you’re worried about wind or rain, successful birdwatching does require good weather. If inclement conditions exist, we may cancel the event, but ticket holders will get a full refund if that occurs. Attendees should wear a hat and sturdy shoes. Dress in layers in case the weather changes over the course of the morning. Bringing a water bottle is also a good idea.   

Dogs are not recommended. Birds see them as predators and therefore tend to avoid the area, making birding difficult. If you require a support animal or other accommodations, please let us know so we can support you.
